  • Soft, pliable, and perfect for tacos and burritos

  • Wayyyy better than store-bought tortillas

How to Store These

Store leftovers in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 3 days, I use a ziplock bag and they stay soft for multiple days.

Ingredients

  • All-purpose flourthe main structure of the tortillas!
  • Salt – enhances flavor and strengthens the dough structure by tightening the gluten that forms, creating a chewy tender tortilla.
  • Baking powder – the leavening agent, this makes the tortilla bubble up when you cook them in the pan! Makes them light, soft, and fluffy.
  • Avocado oil adds fat to the dough which creates a soft, tender, and richer tortilla. The oil also helps keep them from drying out quickly.
  • Warm water – hydrates the flour and helps create a soft dough to make the tortillas.

How to Make These 30 Minute Homemade Tortillas

  1. In a bowl, mix the flour, salt, baking powder. Add the avocado oil and warm water. Mix until the ingredients come together as a shaggy ball.
  2. On a floured surface, knead the dough for 5-8 minutes. The dough should be smooth when it’s ready. Form into a ball and wrap in plastic wrap. Set aside for 20 minutes.
  3. Divide the dough into 8-10 pieces, depending on how big of tortillas you want. Gather all sides and create a ball, repeat with each piece.
  4. On a lightly floured surface, roll each ball into a flat circle. Set aside.
  5. Preheat a large skillet over medium-high heat. When the skillet is hot, cook the tortillas for about 20-30 seconds per side. They are ready to flip when they begin to bubble. Flip and cook for 10 seconds more.
  6. Transfer to a plate with a damp paper towel to cover them while you prepare the rest. Enjoy warm, or place in a ziplock bag for later!

Tips for the Best Tortillas

  • Don’t skip the 20 minute rest time, it helps to relax the gluten in the dough so its easier to shape
  • Roll them thin for a really great texture, sometimes if they’re too thick they don’t turn out as great
  • Use a pre-heated hot pan so they cook quickly and get those incredible bubbles!
  • Keep them covered with a damp paper towel while you’re cooking them to stay soft
