The Night I Ended Up on Stage With Alton Brown
Some people have celebrity encounters that are planned months in advance, usually at a meet in greet with a concert ticket, or even at a book signing. My experience involved a golden ticket, a hot dog assembly line, and a very unexpected 15 minutes on stage with one of my favorite food personalities.

If you’ve followed along with my story for a while, you probably know that food has been a big part of my life. And a lot of that love started when I was little, sitting in front of the TV watching the Food Network. And one of the shows I was especially fascinated by was Good Eats with Alton Brown.
I was about six years old when I realized I loved learning about how things worked. Especially when it came to food and the cooking and baking processes. I was like a sponge, soaking up all the details I could into the science behind ingredients, techniques, and the ‘why’ of things happening the way they did. It was all so interesting to me. Alton Brown had a way of making food science entertaining and approachable, while bringing his own quirky personality and humor to the screen. These experiences shaped my future.
As I fast forward to April 30, 2025, I found myself attending Alton Brown Live at the Temple Hoyne Buell Theatre in Denver. My expectations were fairly simple, this would be a fun date night, full of laughs, and maybe the opportunity to learn a thing or two from someone whose work I’d enjoyed since childhood. But I had no idea the night would turn into something a just a tad more memorable.
The Silver Ticket

When I first found out about the show it was on Instagram. I was so excited I bought tickets immediately, then went back onto Instagram to repost it on my story to tell everyone else about it. As I was doing that, I noticed in the caption a mention that audience members might have the opportunity to become part of the show. Of course my first thought was could I meet THE Alton Brown?! Months went by and it was finally the day of the show!
When we arrived at the theater and found our seats, I noticed an envelope taped underneath mine. Inside was a silver ticket (insert me absolutely cheesing and freaking out). Apparently, the show had randomly selected a few audience members by placing these tickets underneath seats before everyone arrived. Whoever happened to sit in those seats would get the opportunity to go on stage and participate in the show. And somehow, I was one of them.
People sitting around me started asking what the envelope was. They had noticed it on the seat earlier before we’d arrived and had been wondering who would end up sitting there. They were just as excited to find out as I was.
I was ELATED.
Of course, I was also a little nervous and had absolutely no idea what I had just signed myself up for. Part of me was even wondering whether reposting the event on Instagram had somehow played a role in getting selected. Probably not, but I’ll never know! Either way, I had just gone from attending a live show to potentially becoming part of it.
An Unexpected Hot Dog Assembly Line
Near intermission time during the show, it was time for my main event. The audience members with the silver tickets were asked to go on stage! There were four of us total, and we were brought up to take part in what turned out to be a hot dog making challenge.
Before we got started, Alton took a moment to talk with each of us. I was able to introduce myself, share a little about who I was, and explain what I did for work. I told him I was a Produce Buyer and that I essentially “fed the world.” AYFKM
Yes, I actually said that in front of a theater full of people, I guess that’s what happens when you black out on stage from being nervous. No joke, my husband still reminds me how cringey that sounded, and tbh, I still think about it. In my defense I was put on the spot!
After introductions, we spun a wheel to determine our assignments for the hot dog assembly line. I ended up being in charge of putting the dogs in the buns. Our mission was to assemble like 100 hot dogs in 60 seconds. It sounds easy, but trust me… it was tough. Then you add in stage lights, an audience watching you, and thinking back to the dumb thing you just said and it turns into an anxiety ridden moment lol. It was chaotic, just a little ridiculous, but pretty entertaining.
The positive part was that Alton was encouraging and SO funny throughout the whole thing. He made the experience even better. I was so nervous standing in front of an audience and having to talk, but he made the interaction feel fun rather than intimidating. Shoutout to Alton for the really great and positive experience.
Also, one of the funniest moments happened when the entire hot dog assembly line almost tipped over. Everyone had to scramble to catch it before it completely went down. I still laugh thinking about how that could have been the end of it for the fun part of his show. It could have been a disaster, but thankfully we managed to save it.
I don’t remember every single detail of the hot dog challenge, but I can clearly remember the feeling of being up there, trying to keep up with everything happening around me while also realizing I was actually participating in a live Alton Brown show. It was exhilarating, stressful, and joyful all at the same time. And just like that my 15 minutes on stage were over.
From Stage back to the Crowd
Once everything was done and over with, I was truly relieved to get off the stage. I had been nervous the entire time, but I was SO proud of myself for doing something completely outside my comfort zone. I didn’t walk away with a prize or anything like that, but that was never the purpose or intention.
I got to meet Alton Brown. And for the little girl who grew up watching Good Eats, that was SO special.
I remember going backstage after all was said and done and thinking, how in the world did I end up here? It was a surreal feeling. One minute I was sitting in the audience watching someone I’d admired for years since I was like 6 years old, and the next minute I was backstage after participating in his show and chatting with him 2 feet away.
I walked away with a newfound appreciation for what it takes to entertain a crowd. Alton is incredibly witty, well spoken, and quick on his feet. I can’t imagine being able to stand on that stage night after night, making jokes and keeping an entire audience entertained.
A Night I’ll Always Remember
Looking back, this is one of those experiences that makes me grateful I said yes to something without knowing exactly what I was getting into. I could have easily passed on the ticket to my husband or to the person next to me, but I’m so glad I didn’t. Instead, I ended up with a story, photos, and video clips that I can look back on for years to come.
There’s definitely something to be said for allowing yourself to enjoy these moments you don’t expect. Sometimes you don’t need to overthink things, plan every little detail, or know exactly how something will turn out. You just have to show up and be open to the experience. Sometimes when you’re not looking, the thing that will bring you the most joy will show up randomly. And sometimes, you might even find yourself making hot dogs on stage with someone you’ve admired since childhood.
Would I do it again? Absofulutley. Although I will definitely come up with a better introduction than telling an entire audience that I feed the world (cringe).
I’ll probably never live that one down.
