Better Than Store-Bought (And Better for You)
Let’s be real, convenience is great. BUT quality also matters. Most store bought buns are packed with preservatives to extend their shelf life, plus they’re packed with seed oils and additives that don’t add much nutritionally. When you make them at home, you control everything that goes into your food and body. And that’s how you continue to make good healthy choices your body loves too.
It’s a small swap that makes a big difference, especially if you’re someone who cares about what you’re putting into your body but still wants food that tastes amazing.
Success Tips
- Weigh your flour! Using the correct amount of flour is SO important when it comes to baking. Too much flour can create a really dense and dry bun. If you don’t have a scale, use a spoon and measuring cup to lightly measure your flour.
- Use an egg wash – brushing the tops of the buns with egg wash creates that beautiful glossy and golden color we all love our buns to look like. Plus, this helps the sesame seeds stick to the tops of the buns!
Ingredients
- Warm water – hydrates the flour and the warmth activates the yeast, the temp of the water is important. I usually aim for 105 – 107 degrees F. If you don’t have a thermometer, you should be able to touch the water and not burn yourself. It should be a comfortable warm temp.
- Avocado oil – adds fat to the dough which creates a soft, tender, and richer bun. The oil also helps keep them from drying out quickly.
- Honey – adds a gentle sweetness to the buns naturally. No processed sugar here! This also gives the yeast something to eat so the fermentation process can begin, as well as adds to the beautiful golden color of the buns.
- Egg – helps bind the ingredients, and enriches the dough. It helps provide structure and creates a fluffy interior.
- Instant yeast – the leavening agent, the yeast eats the sugars that makes the dough rise and creates that light and airy texture.
- Salt – enhances flavor and strengthens the dough structure by tightening the gluten that forms. It also helps to control the yeast activity so the dough doesn’t rise too fast.
- Bread flour – the main structure of the burger buns. Bread flour has a higher protein content than all purpose flour, which means more/better gluten development. This creates a more chewy, sturdy bun that can hold a delicious burger without it falling apart.
How to Make These 1 Hour Homemade Burger Buns
- Bloom the yeast – In a stand mixer add the water, yeast, honey, and avocado oil and whisk together. Allow the yeast to bloom and become foamy, this should take 3-5 minutes.
- Make the dough – Add in the flour, salt, egg and using the dough hook, knead for 5 minutes, until the dough no longer sticks to the sides of the bowl. If it is still sticks, add 1 Tbsp of additional flour at a time.
- Shape the balls – Divide the dough into 8 pieces. Flatten a little, bring each side into the center and place on the counter, rolling into a ball. Place on a parchment lined baking sheet about 2 inches from one another. Gently press on each ball, flattening slightly.
- Proof – Cover, and set in a warm area of your kitchen for 25-30 minutes or until they have become fluffy and increased in size.
- Bake – Preheat the oven to 400 degrees. Brush with egg wash, and bake 12-15 minutes or until they are golden brown.
